Set aside a morning or afternoon to tackle your wardrobe, it’s not a quick fix, you will need to spend time reorganising but it’s a cathartic exercise that’s incredibly satisfying!  Make sure you have what you need to hand. For example, bin liners, Munco vacuum storage bags, dusters, hangers and tissue paper.  Then, it’s time to get started!

If you haven’t used anything for two years, it’s unlikely that you will use it again, so unless it’s a vintage item, get rid of it.  There are plenty of charities desperate for clothes. There is a service that collects unwanted clothes too, The British Heart Foundation will collect your unwanted clothes (and other items) from outside your home: https://www.bhf.org.uk/shop/donating-goods/time-for-a-clear-out/donate-your-items/arrange-a-free-collection-fb  

Sort your clothes and accessories into piles.  You’ll need a charity pile, a bin pile (for items that aren’t good enough for charity), a dry clean/wash/mend pile and a spring/summer pile.  Those items won’t be going back into your wardrobe so you’ve already created space for your winter clothes that can go straight back into your wardrobe once you’ve organised them. 

Depending on the size of your wardrobe, you could split your items into colours but certainly, even if you don’t have space for colour-co-ordination, you should split your items into different categories.  Keep trousers together, jeans together, tops together, knitwear, skirts, dresses etc.  Doing this makes it so much easier to find things you want to wear in the morning! 

When it comes to shoes and bags, if you have enough space to box them then why not take a small picture and stick it on the front? Alternatively, use clear boxes. This helps you to save time opening and closing boxes looking for the pair of shoes you want!  Check your shoes, clean them up if necessary (wash trainer laces, buff suede, polish leather) and wrap them in tissue carefully to stop damp getting in. 

When piling up your tops, use garment bags to protect them from moths and damp.  It’s wise to buy mothballs to put in different sections of your wardrobe and update them every couple of months because they do run out.

Hang everything on quality hangers.  Make it a must-do and bin wire hangers, they’re not good for clothing, distorting shape.  Wooden hangers, padded hangers and trouser hangers are best.  Always put delicate items under plastic covers or suit covers.

Next, it’s time to tackle your spring/summer clothing.  Anything you definitely won’t need for a few months should be stored away.  This is where some people find they simply don’t have space but with vacuum storage bags you create space you never knew you had!  Whether you want to put your items in a suitcase, in the attic or stored securely in another cupboard somewhere in your home, vacuum storage makes all the difference.  As well as creating space, these bags keep clothes in pristine condition and protects them from mould, moths and other insects.  Munco have a selection of different sizes available too (they come in a pack of 10), and they take moments to use, you just need a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out (they also come with a hand pump) and voila, instant, extra space! 

Obviously, wash, mend and iron anything that you want to use for the coming months and once finished, put them back in your perfectly organised wardrobe.

Protect accessories such as belts and scarves.  Wrap delicate belts in tissue or hang them carefully.  Scarves and other similar items should be folded, again, for delicate materials such as cashmere or angora, wrap in acid-free tissue paper.  Keep hats stuffed with tissue and boxed (the picture trick works well here).

Finally, keep lint rollers in your wardrobe for easy access, so when you get dressed in the morning, you can quickly roll over your winter knitwear to pick up loose fluff etc.  To keep your clothes smelling fresh, you could add some lavender bags, or a nice trick is to keep your empty perfume bottles and leave them in drawers.  Got any other storage tips?  Let us know by commenting below!
